<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>In the human body, ammonia is produced as a result of the metabolism of nitrogen-containing compounds. An increase in the blood concentration of ammonia above the normal range (21-50 μmol/L) is referred to as hyperammonemia. Ammonia is a toxic compound. Although its blood concentration is relatively low in healthy individuals, even a slight increase can have negative health effects, particularly on the central nervous system. Clinical manifestations vary depending on the degree of ammonia elevation and include irritability, vomiting, ataxia, seizures, and coma.</p><p>This literature review summarizes current data on the mechanisms of ammonia formation, classification, and pathogenetic mechanisms of hyperammonemia effect on various organ systems. Particular attention is paid to analyzing the effectiveness of therapeutic strategies aimed at reducing blood ammonia concentrations. The importance of early treatment to minimize the risk of irreversible nervous system damage is emphasized.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>гипераммониемия</kwd><kwd>печеночная энцефалопатия</kwd><kwd>хроническая сердечная недостаточность</kwd><kwd>азот</kwd><kwd>аммиак</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>hyperammonemia</kwd><kwd>hepatic encephalopathy</kwd><kwd>heart failure</kwd><kwd>nitrogen</kwd><kwd>ammonia</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Odigwe CC, Khatiwada B, Holbrook C, et al.
